LNER 43600 & 52255 Upgrade
Ex-LNER Gresley Tourist Third Open (TTO) 43600, along with privately-owned 52255, arrived on the SVR in 1980.
TTO 43600 is owned by the LNER (SVR) Coach Fund. Restoration of 43600 and 52255 to 1935 livery was
undertaken in the mid-1980s. Along with buffet car 643, these coaches provided the Gresley presence on the SVR
for many years.
The interior of 43600 is very much a compromise with its BR Mark 1 seating, and the Coach Fund wants to give
it the ‘Gresley treatment’ with new tables, mirrors, coat hooks and luggage racks. Some more authentic upholstery
is also desirable. Together these improvements would bring the coach more into keeping with our later restorations.
TTO 43600 has a place in history as the first LNER vehicle with welded chassis - which made it one ton lighter
than a fabricated chassis. Both 43600 and 52255 also served in the 1960’s as part of the Eastern Region Control
Office train – which was intended for use in the event of nuclear war.

THE LNER (SVR) COACH FUND’S 43600 FACELIFT WILL COST AROUND £8000
The Fund is also adding LNER-style wall fittings to TTO 52255, in exchange for equipment donated by 52255’s
Owner.
The Coach Fund is anxious to complete all this work soon after its repairs to GWR Snake 1145 (which will
become Bewdley’s ‘new’ station shop). The Fund can then make a start on its next major project – restoration to
running order of its 1943 Gresley pigeon van 70759. Share in these projects so that we can make this all a reality!
